DISTRICT ATTORNEY WALSH ANNOUNCES 118 FIREARMS TURNED IN AT SUFFERN GUN BUYBACK EVENT

NEW CITY, N.Y. – District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II announced that 118 firearms were turned in during the Gun Buyback event held today at the Leo Lydon Community Center in Suffern, New York.

The event, hosted in partnership with the Suffern Police Department, resulted in 71 handguns, 21 assault weapons, 25 rifles and shotguns, and 1 non-functioning firearm.

“We’re grateful for our law enforcement partners who helped make this event possible,” said Chief Deirdre Smith, the Chief of Detectives for the Rockland County District Attorney’s Investigative Unit. “Events like this are a key part of our broader strategy to reduce gun violence through prevention and partnership.”

Village of Suffern Deputy Mayor Jo Meegan-Corrigan joined alongside the Suffern Police Department and the DA’s Office.

“It was exceptional watching everyone work together and I’m grateful for the collaboration,” said Meegan-Corrigan.

Participants arrived at the site with their unloaded firearms packaged in a plastic or paper bag in the trunk of their vehicle. Law enforcement safely removed the firearms, no questions asked, so participants could remain anonymous.

“Every gun turned in is one less that can fall into the wrong hands,” said District Attorney Walsh. “Our office remains dedicated to proactive, practical solutions that keep our communities safe, and we are thankful for the Suffern Police Department and the Village of Suffern in helping make today a success.”
