Deirdre Smith began her career in 1993 as a police officer with the New York City Police Department.  She served as a patrol officer in the 17th precinct in midtown Manhattan until 1998 when she transferred to the Village of Suffern Police Department.  She continued her duties as a police officer patrolling the village and serving as a DARE officer from 2006-2008.  In 2007, she was promoted to Police Sergeant.  In that capacity she supervised other officers.  She served as a field training officer, mentoring and educating newly hired officers.  She reviewed reports and evaluated the officers within her chain of command with respect to their job performance and initiated disciplinary action when required.  In 2020, she retired from the Village of Suffern Police Department and joined the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office as a Confidential Criminal Investigator to the District Attorney.  She investigated confidential and highly sensitive investigations into official misconduct, financial frauds, election law violations and internal affairs investigations, reporting directly to the District Attorney.  In 2024, she was promoted to Chief of Criminal Investigators, becoming the first woman to achieve the rank of Chief of a department in the history of Rockland County.
